C-TOWN’S TOP 50 SPORTS MOMENTS OF 2012/13: #44- The Haka
By: Ralph Amsden
This summer we’re counting down what we believe are the Top 50 memorable sports moments for Chandler, AZ prep athletes and alumni during the 2012/13 sports seasons. Coming in at 44- Chandler football’s intense pre-game “haka” ritual.
Haka: a traditional ancestral war cry, dance or challenge from the Māori people of New Zealand. It is a posture dance performed by a group, with vigorous movements and stamping of the feet with rhythmically shouted accompaniment.
The Haka has been embraced by many an athletic squad, but Chandler High football took it to a whole new level this year. Before each and every game, fans at Austin Field gathered ’round, camera phones ready while frightened toddlers huddled into the safe grasp of loved ones. The Haka certainly has it’s haters, as some opposing fans even donned rather creative “Haka your way home” T-shirts. The videos below don’t do it justice- make sure to come out and see it live this year.
